Plus d'un an après "Memories of a Dog" ThOmas.W revient avec un EP à double visage : 5 nouveaux morceaux à écouter indépendamment, ou bien sous forme d'un long collage de 27 minutes. Ces deux versions sont présentes dans le fichier téléchargeable gratuitement, et le seront également dans la version CD-r à paraître prochainement. L'auditeur peut alors moduler / modifier / personnaliser son écoute de "Dancing Troubles Away"! L'idée est finalement assez fortuite selon Thomas : "Les 5 morceaux ont été composés dans un ordre différent de celui proposé, et ce n'est qu'en écrivant les textes que la notion de chronologie m'est apparue. Une histoire qui se tient en 5 parties, comparables au déroulement d'une vie, à l'évolution du sentiment amoureux, aux étapes d'une révolte, le tout lié à la danse comme exutoire, comme moyen d'exacerber les sensations et les passions. Un ordre s'est alors imposé, et les transitions improvisées sont venues naturellement."
La version "collage" est en fait une boucle ("loop" caractérisant la musique de ThOmas.W), mais sûrement pas un cercle parfait, plutôt un chemin sinueux et chaotique dont on ne sort jamais. L'intro donne le ton, avec la voix d'Adrienne Rich s'interrogeant : "What kind of beast would turn its life into words?" et le "performer" devient alors un animal mû par son instinct, un poête bestial dont les sons / les mots raconte l'histoire de tous.

More than a year after "Memories of a Dog" ThOmas.W is back with a double-face EP : 5 new tracks to listen to separately, or as a long 27-minute collage. These two versions are included in the file as a free download, and will also be on the forthcoming CD-r version. Thus, the listener can modulate / modify / personalize his listening of "Dancing Troubles Away"! The idea came naturally, incidentally according to ThOmas.W : "The 5 tracks were composed in a different order as the one on the EP, and when I wrote the texts, the idea of a chronology came to me. A story made of 5 parts, like the progress of a life, the evolution of a love feeling, the stages of a revolution, all this linked to the notion of dancing as an outlet, as a way of intensifying sensations and passions. Then the order came, and the improvised transitions came naturally."
The "collage" version is actually a loop (emblematic of ThOmas.W's music), but it's certainly not a perfect circle, rather a sinuous and chaotic path from which you never escape. The intro sets the pace, with the voice of Adrienne Rich, questioning : "What kind of beast would turn its life into words?" and thus the "performer" becomes an animal driven by its instinct, a beastly poet whose sounds / words tell everyone's story.

"Visual" is a collaboration with Dave Fuglewicz (who took part in the "Manifesto" EP, released last summer), and Noise Research (an experimental noise artist from the UK, see link below!).

"Sleepy Awake" is the central piece of this 3-track EP : a 16-minute experience that catches the ear and mind. The two mixes of "Visual" complete the EP with smartness. "Visual" EP is a clever mix of noise, electronics, collage and spoken word that is really worth discovering. Play it loud, and let yourself go!

Jeremy Gluck is back on myhand.thanx with a new EP, "Manifesto" in collaboration with Dave Fuglewicz. The 3 mixes consist in a radical, uncompromised work on sound. About his collaboration with Dave Fuglewicz, here is what Jeremy writes (at the same time, discover Tapegerm!) :

Dave Fuglewicz's Manifesto: Modesty and Mastery

I don't recall when exactly I joined Tapegerm, a loop collective now past its ten anniversary. It was about that time I was neck deep in mixing 'Div Joyvision', the album I made for and with Toronto spoken word ace Michael Dent and which comprised in the end mixes made from material provided by Tapegerm.

Having plundered Tapegerm for everything I needed, I turned finally to putting something back, in the form of spoken word recordings – grainy at best thanks to my poor equipment and technique – I archived and sent up to be shared amongst the many mixers.

The standard of work at Tapegerm is always high; artists such as Mental Anguish, Omnitechnomatrix and others cut the mustard with a machete. But it was one mix in particular that one day captivated me. “Sleep On the Edge”, a dispeptic reflection in what-for? Time, created by Dave Fuglewicz. Amidst the quality out of control across the 'germ, Atlanta-based boffin Dave's mix stood out, a raw, tilted and highly intuitive reading of my slanted, surly text.

So began years of collaboration, mix upon mix, bringing us lately to a trilogy, Saneworld, and a set of radical sound adventures with Dave in complete control: Manifesto. Working with Dave is a joy. As is the case with numbers of online electronica creators, Dave is mostly unsung but revered and treasured by a handful of fellow artists and aware aficionados. I can take little credit for the work we do together; my contribution is a trigger, but Dave does ninety per cent of the hard thinking and hard work, and without him I would not have done some of the most accomplished music of my zigzag career. Vision and precision ever his watchwords, meticulous in execution and with an empathy for my words that has unfolded with a natural and extraordinary ease, Dave's making of Manifesto is yet more evidence of a great artist lost in (cyber)space. It is a real honour for myhand.thanx records to release this beautiful EP for two reasons : first, the tracks are awesome, strange collages, noisy bits added to melodies and cinematographic references. Second, Jeremy Gluck is part of a certain History of music that many of us listen of have listened to... He started his career with The Barracudas, whose album "Drop Out" is considered seminal. In 1986, he released his first solo album "I knew Buffalo Bill" with Nikki Sudden and Epic Soundtrack. Goddess of rock Lydia Lunch covered his track "Burning Skulls Rise"... Jeremy also worked with Mick Harvey and Eric Debris. IN 2008, he released "Victim of Dreams."
Jeremy's work is now more focused on ambient / experimental music, spoken word and sound poetry, without forgetting or going too far away from rock'n'roll.
The "Love Is Awake In Me Like Water" EP confirms this artistic orientation. Gluck pays homage to Terence Malick's "The Thin Red Line" film about the Guadalcanal carnage. Mixes 1 and 2 are Jeremy's work on sounds, words, soundscapes and shapes. Mixes 3 and 4 are Slave Labour's remixes, and they're stunning, and groovy.

C'est un véritable honneur pour myhand.thanx records de sortir ce bel EP pour deux raisons : Premièrement, les morceaux sont de magnifiques et étranges collages, des parties bruitistes mélangées aux mélodies et aux références cinématographiques. Deuxièmement, Jeremy Gluck fait partie d'une certaine Histoire de la musique, musique que nombre d'entre nous écoute ou a écouté... La 21ème sortie myhand.thanx nous vient de Finlande, avec ce duo de musique DIY electro rock formé en 2004. La particularité de cet album est qu'il n'y a pas d'ordre établi entre les morceaux, chacun étant libre de les écouter comme il le veut. Parmi nos préférés, "Cannibal" ou "Sympathy for the King of Thunder." Zoomonk nous propose des titres percutants, noisy à souhait, très orientés rock, à l'image de ses influences (Neu! Royal Trux ou Suicide).
A découvrir absolument!!!

Myhand.thanx's 21st release comes from Finland, with this DIY electro rock duo formed in 2004. The particularity is that there's no established order among the tracks and you can listen to the album the way you want to. Amongst our favourite, "Cannibal" or "Sympathy for the King of Thunder." Zoomonk creates smashing tracks, really noisy, very rock-oriented, like their influences (Neu! Royal Trux or Suicide).

ThOmas.W is back with a brand new album, more than one year after "Stories left to tell." New songs, new stories told with lots of irony and commitment. The solo artist offers a sort of modern cold wave, apparently influenced by drone music as well as 21st century r'n'b... Strange mix but the result is more than convincing. The 11-minute opening track "PlastiK yOuth" reflects the multi-directional tone of the album, loops, rhythm, noise, harmonics, and a few words. Then, the songs melt into one another, like many different versions of a single idea : how to cope with frustration?

On est accroché dès le premier titre "Soul Empty" qui, sous ses faux airs de rock'n'roll old school, propose une new wave dépoussiérée et inspirée. Les 7 titres de "Dreamville" se suivent et s'enchaînent dans un logique implacable, dévoilant peu à peu leurs secrets, cette Dream Ville se changeant peu à peu en Dream Evil... jusqu'au final, "The Sweet Devil Hand," qui achève la transformation.

Giles is back, folks!!! Last year, he threw his nervous works at us, right in the middle of our faces, and it was quite difficult to get out of that nightmare... But the "daAdaA ep" is more intimate now... 3 tracks played on an old folk guitar, no real audible voice, and a more contained violence. This ep has to be listened to from A to Z, each track being linked to each other, each minute taking you deeper and deeper to the roots of Morris's musical background, which is NOISE.

Giles est de retour!!! L'an dernier il noous avait lancé ces "nervous works" en plein visage, et il était plutôt difficile de sortir de ce cauchemar... Mais ce "daAdaA ep" est plus intimiste cette fois... 3 morceaux joués sur une vieille guitare folk, une voice pas franchement audible, et une violence plus contenue. Ph.G... drôle de pseudonyme derrière lequel se cache Pier, et quelques autres amis (Vinsh, Tow...) qui se sont souvent retrouvés à ne savoir que faire de leur temps libre dans les années 90... Car c'est en fait une compilation de leurs créations musicales spontanées que vous propose ici myhand.thanx records. On entend encore les craquements de la bande magnétique et aussi la poussière qui s'y est déposée au fil des années. Du pur DIY, de la musique bout de ficelle, mais toujours faite avec réflexion et maîtrise! On aime particulièrement "I want to live in the wood" qui rappelle Jesus and Mary Chain, mais aussi "Tintin, Haddock et Milou" qui pourrait bien être l'influence principale de Katerine sans même qu'il le sache....!
Ph.G... a funny pseudonym behind which is hidden Pier, and some other friends (Vinsh, Tow...) who often found themselves bored and wondering what to do during their free time in the 90s... Indeed, myhand.thanx records offers here a compilation of their spontaneous musical creations. We can still hear the crackling of the magnetic tape and also the dust which appeared throughout the years. Pure DIY music, but always made with reflexion and mastery! Une nouvelle collaboration pour myhand.thanx records! C'est avec un immense plaisir que nous vous proposons "Little Shadows on the Mix Tape" des Mutant Beatniks. Un collage de divers mixes et autres sons glanés au fil des années par ce collectif à géométrie variable venu de Bath, UK. Aujourd'hui composé de Shaun Roberts, Dennis Ward et Roj Crompton, le projet Mutant Beatniks existe depuis 1986, et propose des créations sonores électroniques, proches de la musique noise, des collages, et de la musique expérimentale du XXème siècle. Autant inspirés par Cabaret Voltaire, John Foxx, Stockhausen, Pierre Henry que par les bruits de leur environnement, le trio compose, (dé)construit formidablement une musique empreinte d'instinct, d'inventivité et de réflexion sur la création. "Little Shadows on the Mix Tape" est le premier mix d'une (longue?) série proposée par Mutant Beatniks.

A collage of varioous mixes and other sounds gathered throughout the years by this flexible collective coming from Bath, UK. Today, it consists in Shaun Roberts, Dennis Ward and Roj Crompton. Mutant Beatniks exist since 1986 and propose electronic sound creations, close to noise music, artistic collages and 20th-century experimental music. Inspired by Cabaret Voltaire, John Foxx, Stockhausen, Pierre Henry as well as by the noises of their surroundings, the trio extraordinarily composes, (de)constructs a music fraught with instinct, inventiveness and reflexion on creation. "Little Shadows on the Mix Tape" is the first mix of a (long?) series proposed by Mutant Beatniks.

Tiny Concept... du pur minimalisme qui ne pouvait que plaire à myhand.thanx! Letty, qui se cache derrière ce pseudonyme mystérieux, nous propose des morceaux crus, percutants et entêtants. Une guitare, une batterie sommaire et une loop station, pour un folk hardcore sans compromis, qui pourrait rappeler autant Shellac que Cat Power (période "Myra Lee"). Tiny Concept est une nomade du rock, quittant souvent Bordeaux pour des salles obscures d'Allemagne, des apparts ou des bars aux Etats-Unis. Letty nous emmène loin, à travers le monde certes, mais surtout dans les tréfonds de l'âme humaine... Un concept pas si tiny que ça!

Tiny Concept... some pure minimalism which was bound to please myhand.thanx! Letty, who's hidden behind this mysterious pseudonym, offers raw, striking and obsessing songs. A guitar, a rudimentary drumset and a loop station, for an uncompromised hardcore folk music which may remind you of Shellac as well as Cat Power ("Myra Lee" era). Tiny Concept is a rock nomad, often leaving Bordeaux for dark places in Germany, flats and bars in the U.S.A. Letty is taking us far away, all over the world, but above all, deep in the human soul... This concept is not as tiny as it seems!

myhand.thanx is so proud to release Zack's wonderful album! His music is so intense, rooted in American history, poetic and disturbing... Here's what he declares about it :

"Savage Histories of the Appalachian region" is an album about the underlying and unconcious wickedness in this world, the numinous sense of loss and the desperation this intimation stirs into being. That being said the setting could have been Uzbekistan, Kenya, Singapore or France; desperation and the mutilated modern man is a global phenomenon, maybe a commonality that we share the deepest with our fellow human organisms. Recognition of this rift is tantamount to the awakening of empathy; empathy being our most human but conversely our most divine characteristic. To understand is to forgive, to truly love and cherish, to be merciful and to be honest with ourselves and others. Seemingly simple and logical requests from one suffering being to another, but simplicity itself has an astounding, ancient and directly felt force that by it's very startling nature renders its concept complex and difficult, making music the ideal conveyor of this abstract idea (music itself hinting, suggesting and brushing often unintentionally against our broadest and most archetypal understandings.)

Zack Kouns nous emmène dans des contrées inexplorées de la nature humaine. Ses histoires se passent dans les Appalaches mais pourraient tout autant se dérouler ailleurs dans le monde, tant le desespoir et le déchirement sont un phénomène global de nos sociétés modernes. Reconnaître cela nous mène alors à l'empathie : notre caractéristique la plus humaine et la plus divine... Comprendre c'est pardonner, aimer et chérir, être reconnaissant et honnête avec soi et les autres. Cette simplicité est si forte et ancienne que son idée même en devient complexe, alors la musique devient le meilleur moyen d'exprimer cette idée abstraite (car la musique fait souvent allusion ou référence de façon inconsciente à no connaissances les plus larges et les plus archétypiques)

Sud-Africain, Jacques est un pianiste et manipulateur de sons qui tente d'allier mélodie et bruit en créant un état musical où la frontière entre les deux se désagrège et chacun se retrouve lié à l'autre inexorablement... Travaillant seul, De Villiers élabore des paysages sonores langoureux, des peintures de sons mélancoliques. Son but principal est de rendre le bruit plus accessible et de présenter la mélodie de façon plus expérimentale.

A South African pianist and sound manipulator, who attempts to merge a meeting point between melody and noise, creating a musical state where the line between the two disintegrates and both elements are melt together inseparably. Working on his own, De Villiers constructs dreamy soundscapes and melancholy washes of sounds. His overall aim is to make noise more accessible and the presentation of melody more experimental.
